1 John 1:9(NKJV)
9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
There’s that word again…IF. (Biggest word in the dictionary according to my dad-RIP dad, thanks for the lesson!)
Okay…so here’s what that looks like in real simple form. This is one of those Bible promises. Do a Google search sometime on the promises of God, you might be surprised. Maybe you know some Bible stories but haven’t really spent any time reading the word of God for yourself; I understand, that was me a few years ago.
If that’s you, I highly encourage you to check it out. You’d be amazed and how much God wants to speak to you and He does so through His word.
So let’s look at this verse, it’s incredible. John is telling us about the process; he tells us if we do this, God will do that. God is not a man that he should lie (Numbers 23:19). IF we confess our sins, He WILL forgive us. We don’t even have to go to a priest…the veil has been torn, we can go directly to the Throne of Grace…DIRECTLY to God the Father! (I know…many of you are shaking your heads right now…it’s true! Search it out in the word of God, it’s there!)
This is great, I hope you like it. I learned the S.O.A.P. method online. Probably Pinterest. Then the pastor at my church gave us a sample of it during a sermon one Sunday and I decided to give it a try. It works great! Later, I saw another blogger came up with her own acronym and I liked it too…so then I decided, why don’t I come up with my own acronym? So I did…but I’m not ready to share my version yet…that will come in time.
For now we’ll stick with S.O.A.P. – Scripture/Observation/Application/Prayer
S=Scripture: Write it out…(actually works best by hand but here we are). If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
O=Observation: Here’s where we “observe” what the words themselves mean…Right off the bat, this is a give and take. WE have to do something. IF we do this…He WILL do that.
What do we have to do?
CONFESS=Declare…Admit or acknowledge.
Confess what? Our SIN= Transgression-action that endangers the relationship between an individual and God.
Confess to who? to GOD through JESUS with the help of the Holy Spirit. That’s why we pray in His name.
What happens IF we confess our sin(s) to God? HE is FAITHFUL=Loyal, constant, steadfast, true…AND JUST=based on what is morally ‘right’-impartial, unbiased, honorable, upright, virtuous TO FORGIVE=Cancel (a debt), pardon, excuse, absolve…cleanse-make thouroughly clean of UNRIGHTEOUSNESS=wicked, sinful, evil.
…now that’s cool! That’s how you learn the scripture. I think you’ll like my new way once I show it to you too…for now, this will do.
A=Application: How can I apply this scripture to my life today?
Well, I know when I’ve done something that is sinful and so do you. You may try to ignore it at first, but if you’re truly walking with the Lord, He won’t let you get away with that for long. The closer I get to God the more He reveals sin to me in new ways. When God points out sin He is like a teacher showing you how to correct an error with a math or grammar problem. He wants you to “get it”; He wants to help you see the “right” way to go about getting the answer. God the Father is “Our Father” and we are His sons and daughters. When we accept Christ as our Lord and Savior He sends His Holy Spirit to live in us and be our helper and our guide, our wise counselor and our comforter. (Side note: If you aren’t experiencing the fruit of the Holy Spirit in your life you need to go to God and ask Him if you have truly been born again.) God the Father does correct us and consequences are part of the natural order of things but the He never brings shame or condemnation. There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. Romans 8:1. The Holy Spirit doesn’t try to shame you, He is tender and merciful. So, I can apply this verse by going to God directly, confessing my sins, thanking Him for the blood of Jesus that cleanses me from all unrighteousness. I can believe in His promise to forgive me and I can move forward with a new desire to turn from sin and walk in grace with the help of the Holy Spirit.
***Man…doing this brings up so many more topics. God is speaking so clearly to me right now as I write this…I could go on and on. Now I know what some preachers mean when they say they get off track and on a “rabbit trail”…there’s just so much to chew on here! I hope you’re seeing that too!
P=Prayer: Write out your prayer of thanksgiving to God for how He is speaking to you through His word…write out whatever’s on your heart in this moment with Him. Mine would look something like this:
Thank You Father that your word is true! That it is Your will that we confess our sins so that You can offer us new life; everlasting life with You! Your word is alive and active…it gives me such great joy for how much You love me and want to fellowship with me. Thank You for how You speak to me and reveal Your heart to me when I spend time with You. Thank You for Your faithfulness; for the gift of the Holy Spirit who lives in me. Thank You for Your Son, Jesus Christ who died for me and because of His sacrifice, I can come boldly to Your throne of grace. Thank You Father in Jesus name.
Hebrews 4:16 (NKJV) 16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
This was some of my “quiet time” Bible verses that I’m working on. Anything to get me writing ! I hope it blesses you as much as it’s been blessing me!
Remember, God speaks to us through His WORD! And…Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the WORD of God! (Romans 10:17)
